Topic: Why Fashion Brands Should Invest in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Systems

In our fast paced world, technology has taken over most of not all aspect of human activities. The fashion industry has not being exempted from these changes. Technology has reshaped the fashion industry in so many ways.


Social media and e-commerce

Before technology penetrated the fashion world, fashion was restricted to the elites. However, technology has played a major role in making fashion accessible to everyone. This is due to the help of social media and e-commerce. It is evident that social media has helped in the consumption of fashion. The rise of social media influencers, exemplified by "get ready with me" videos during the COVID-19 pandemic

Before the introduction of e-commerce websites, persons who were ready to purchase items from fashion brands had to go to specific boutiques to get them. However, with the Advent of technology especially the use of e-commerce, consumers all over the world can purchase an item at home. For example, a consumer can purchase an item in Nigeria from the comfort of his home from a Zara or Shein online store.


3D Printing

Addressing ethical concerns, technology, particularly 3D printing, has allowed fashion brands to create unique designs without compromising on labor practices, waste disposal, or the use of animal products. Innovations like the viral spray-painted dress showcased by Copoerni on Bella Hadid and 3D-printed shoes by Adidas exemplify the positive impact of technology in fashion.


Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality is another area of technology that has helped shaped the fashion world. Consumers who want to purchase a fashion item can now try on their items virtually, allowing them to see how the clothes will look on them without being physically present. Brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Gucci are examples of brands that offer such services to their consumers.


Artificial intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence is also an important aspect of technology that people are scared of accepting because of the fear of reduced employment. However people cannot shy away from the fact that A.I has improved shopping experiences of customers, this is due to that fact that traditional fashion techniques are more time consuming, it normally take months for a style to reach a manufacturer, but A.I would help speed up the creative process for designers

Chatbots are used to boost customer satisfaction. Most fashion brands website have adopted A.I chat to enhance customer experience. It is beyond the bounds of possibility to go to any fashion website and not see an A.I chat.

the symbiotic relationship between fashion and technology is undeniable. From Instagram shopping to virtual try-ons and the use of influencers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, technology continues to reshape the fashion landscape. Fashion brands must embrace these innovations to stay relevant in an ever-evolving industry.
